Cervical Screening (Smear Test)

At Dorset Private GP, we can carry out two types of Cervical Screening (Smear Test).

How it works

You are free to choose from either of the below 2 options for your cervical screening. The first option is HPV testing only and the second option is HPV testing PLUS Cytology testing (to check for abnormal cells).

If you have not had a smear test in the last 3 years or you have had abnormal cells detected in the past and would like the cells checked again, please see below for more details.

Available at our Bournemouth & Ashley Cross clinics.

Smear Test – Option 1 – HPV test only

Option 1 - £166

In the NHS this type of smear test is the only one routinely offered. The test will only screen for the presence of the HPV virus. If this is detected then the cytology (checking the cells) will be carried out to see if there are any abnormal cells present. Evidence shows HPV testing is a more effective way to identify women at risk of cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact. Certain sub-types of HPV are linked to the development of abnormal cells and can cause cervical cancer. The total cost including the 20-minute appointment with the doctor and the laboratory test analysis is £166. Please note, if HPV is detected by the laboratory, then the cytology will be carried out free of charge.

Smear Test – Option 2 – HPV Test and Cytology

Option 2 - £241

If you would like the Cytology testing (checking of the cells) carried out regardless of whether you have a negative or positive HPV result, then you can request to have both tested at the same time. The total cost of the 20-minute appointment with the doctor and the laboratory test analysis is £241. The turnaround time for receiving the result is 4 working days (does not include weekends). Results are emailed to you the same day they are received.

This test offers more peace of mind for women who have had abnormal cells detected in the past.
